The Best Vegan Bakeries in Utrecht for Breakfast and Sweet Treats
Cardamom bun from Kluts bakery
During my Christmas break, I spent quite some time in Utrecht, one of my favourite cities in the Netherlands. It had been a while since my last visit, and I was curious to see how the city had changed. As a foodie, I was especially happy to discover so many new trendy food spots, particularly when it comes to vegan bakeries.
For this blog post, I tested several vegan bakeries in Utrecht and put together a list of my favourites (plus a honourable mention). So if you’re in Utrecht looking for a vegan breakfast or a sweet treat, you’ll know exactly where to go.
Have a Roll
I wanted to start this list with my current favourite, Have a Roll. Fun fact: I also tested Have a Roll with my mom in Amsterdam, and it was one of my very first blog articles. Back then, Have a Roll was my mom’s favourite, but I was not fully convinced yet. Now, after trying it again in Utrecht, I can confidently say that this is my favourite vegan sweet treat.
Have a Roll is a Belgian company with two locations in the Netherlands, in Amsterdam and Utrecht. They specialise in vegan cinnamon rolls, which are, to put it simply, very good. The menu includes ten different rolls, eight regular flavours and two that change every month. These are called Monthly Specials and are usually seasonal flavours. In December, for example, they offered a Twix roll and a cardamom roll.
The Utrecht location is at Zadelstraat 4 and is open every Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00, and every Monday from 12:00 to 17:00. This means that you can (you probably shouldn’t) get vegan cinnamon rolls every day of the week.
If I can recommend one thing, okay maybe two, it is to go a little early, because they can sell out quite quickly. You can also preorder via their website for pickup, for example a box of four cinnamon rolls for 16 euros. They are not the cheapest cinnamon rolls, but I do think they are completely worth it. And if I can recommend one flavour, the cookie dough roll is my absolute favourite.
Kluts
While Have a Roll is more of a takeaway spot, at Kluts you can really sit down for a well-deserved break. Kluts is a 100 percent vegan coffee bar and bakery that makes homemade pies, cakes, and cookies. While I was there, they had some beautiful pies on display, such as chocolate mousse raspberry and lemon blueberry pie.
Personally, I tried their chocolate chip cookie, which was very good. It was nice and soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside, and filled with big, chunky chocolate chips. I feel like the trending bakery item in the Netherlands right now is the cardamom bun, and at Kluts I tried my very first vegan one, which definitely lived up to the hype.
Kluts is located at Achter de Dom 6, right behind the famous Dom Tower. This makes it a perfect meetup spot if you want to go for coffee and a sweet treat with a friend or partner. From what I tried, you can really taste that everything is made with a lot of love, which I always appreciate. The atmosphere and staff are also very nice, and the place is dog friendly.
Kluts is open every day from 10:00 to 17:00, and I can highly recommend paying them a visit, whether you want to sit down and relax or grab something to go.
Rose & Vanilla
Next on the list is Rose & Vanilla, another bakery you might have spotted in my article about Amsterdam. At Rose & Vanilla, they serve cakes for everyone, as everything is gluten free, dairy free, and vegan. All their cakes are made with pure ingredients, and you can truly taste this. If you are looking for something extremely sweet, Rose & Vanilla might not be for you, as everything is made without refined sugar.
My favourites at Rose & Vanilla are their cheesecakes, which come in mango yuzu and raspberry strawberry flavours. They have an almost healthy, homemade taste that I really love, and I often get them in the petit four size. For most of their cakes, they offer a bite sized petit four option, which I often use as an excuse to try multiple flavours at once.
Rose & Vanilla is located at Amsterdamsestraatweg 13 and is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00. It is slightly outside the city centre, but still walkable. It is also good to know that Rose & Vanilla has several selling points throughout Utrecht, where you can buy a selection of their cakes as well.
KEEK
Last but not least is KEEK, an organic bakery, store, and café with three locations around Utrecht. Each location has its own charm, but you can always find delicious homemade pies, scones, breads, and other treats. KEEK is not fully vegan, so I recommend asking the kind staff about the vegan options they have on display. When I visited, they had a raspberry blondie, banana bread, a date coconut bar, and some savoury options like focaccia.
One of the things I love about KEEK is that they sell their own cake mixes, for example for scones, and some of the baking recipes are vegan, as you can see on their website. Regarding opening hours, the Springweg location has slightly different times, but the other locations are open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 17:00, and Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 to 18:00.
Honourable Mention: Life’s a Peach
While I did not get a chance to visit this place, I wanted to give it an honourable mention. Life’s a Peach is a vegan focacceria and bakery, where they also sell local design and art. It sounds like a very inspirational place, but unfortunately, when I was in Utrecht, Life’s a Peach was closed, so I didn’t get a chance to try anything. It’s definitely on my list to visit next time, and maybe till then, you can tell me if it’s worth it!
Conclusion
With this blog post I hope I have inspired you to visit these amazing vegan bakeries in Utrecht. There is something for everyone whether you are craving a sweet treat or something on the purer, healthier side. I really enjoyed spending time in Utrecht over my Christmas break and I hope you will love this city as much as I do.
If I missed your favourite vegan bakery in Utrecht let me know in the comments! I am always on the lookout for more spots to try.
