Gluten Free Bakeries in Utrecht
If you have read my latest blog post, you already know that I spent my Christmas break back home and visited one of my favourite cities, Utrecht. In Rome, and Italy in general, there are some amazing gluten free bakery options, so my standards are quite high. I was curious to see whether Utrecht also has great gluten free options for a sweet treat, and in this blog post I will tell you exactly where to go for gluten free bakeries in Utrecht.
Rose & Vanilla
My favourite when it comes to gluten free cakes in Utrecht is Rose & Vanilla, a bakery you might have spotted in my article about vegan bakeries in Amsterdam. At Rose & Vanilla, they really serve cakes for everyone, as everything is gluten free, dairy free, and vegan. Personally, I am also blessed with a nut allergy, and they even have a selection of nut free cakes, so when they say cakes for everyone, they really mean it.
What I love about the cakes at Rose & Vanilla is that they are made with pure ingredients, and you can truly taste this. If you are looking for something extremely sweet, Rose & Vanilla might not be for you, as everything is made without refined sugar. My favourites are their cheesecakes in mango yuzu and raspberry strawberry flavours. They have an almost healthy, homemade taste that I really love, and I often get them in the petit four size. For most of their cakes, they offer a bite sized petit four option, which I happily use as an excuse to try multiple flavours at once.
Rose & Vanilla is located at Amsterdamsestraatweg 13 and is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00. It is slightly outside the city centre but still very walkable. At the bakery, they also have a few tables and chairs where you can sit down and enjoy your cake with a coffee or tea. It is also good to know that Rose & Vanilla has several selling points throughout Utrecht, such as the Bakkerswinkel, where you can buy a selection of their cakes as well. So if you find yourself in the city centre with no energy to walk to the actual store, just know this is a great option too.
Madame Cocos
Another gem when it comes to gluten free sweet treats in Utrecht is Madame Cocos. As you can probably tell by the name, the main star here is coconut. They make delicious, fresh, coconut based pastries called cocosballen in Dutch, which basically translates to coconut balls.
What I love about Madame Cocos is that they offer an impressive range of flavours, including some very interesting combinations. When I visited, they had flavours like lemon curd, ginger and black pepper, matcha white chocolate, crème brûlée, red velvet, and more. I tried the lemon curd flavour and the classic one with dark chocolate chips, and let’s just say I already cannot wait to go back. They are definitely on the sweeter side, much sweeter than Rose & Vanilla for example, but it works really well with the coconut flavour and makes for a very filling and delicious sweet treat.
All the coconut dough used at Madame Cocos is gluten free, and they even have a selection of vegan flavours. If you have any questions, the staff are very kind and more than happy to help.
Madame Cocos is located at Godebaldkwartier 90 in Hoog Catharijne, the large shopping centre in Utrecht. It can be a bit tricky to find at first, but if you use Google Maps, you should have no problem.
Madame Cocos is open from 10:00 to 20:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, from 12:00 to 20:00 on Monday, and from 12:00 to 18:00 on Sunday.
Gebaksjuwelier
I debated whether to include this one, mainly because it is not located in Utrecht but in Culemborg. That said, Culemborg is only about twenty minutes from Utrecht by train, and for die hard gluten free foodies this spot is definitely worth knowing about.
Gebaksjuwelier is an artisan bakery that is completely gluten free. They sell everything from bread to cakes, pastries, and savoury snacks. What I really love about this place is that they offer gluten free versions of many Dutch classics, such as ontbijtkoek and kaasstengels. If you ever find yourself in the area, I can highly recommend paying them a visit.
Gebaksjuwelier is located at Schoolhof West 13A in Culemborg. The bakery is open on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, and on Saturday from 9:00 to 15:00.
Conclusion
I hope this blog article has inspired you to visit these amazing gluten free bakeries in Utrecht and Culemborg. They are lovely businesses with hard working and kind staff, and when I am back in Utrecht in the future, I will definitely visit them again. It is also good to know that Rose & Vanilla has multiple selling points throughout Utrecht, so make sure to check their website to see where you can pick up their delicious cakes.
